According to Ayurveda this disease is called as AVSAAD (Manoavsad). Ayurveda mentions Depression as ‘Vishada’. This is also described as “most disease aggravating factor”. Depression is a mental disease going along with body processes – or vice versa.  Ayurveda principles say that avsaad is because of suppression of Prana Vata.Pranava Vata is responsible for the proper functioning of mind. Imbalanced Prana vata not only affects the quality of sleep but also effects ability of perception, memory and level of consciousness. The causes vary from mental, environmental, social or personal but in all the ways it lead to severe complications to the patient and to the families. In Ayurveda, imbalance in psychic energies (sattva, rajas, tamas) supported by imbalance of physical energies (vata, pitta, kapha) are believed to cause various mental disorders. This applies to depression as well. Lack of mental discipline, indulgence in negative thoughts and activities and negative emotions, such as hatred, anger, etc. are known to cause imbalance in psychic energies which in turn leads to diseases like depression. Improper life style, bad habits, addictions and lack of personal hygiene are also underlying factors behind depression.

Every disease we come across has its link with negative stress, such as heart attack, High BP, stroke, IBS, Colitis, Acidity, asthma, Impotency, Addictions, Cancer etc are directly linked to negative stress. Andropause & Ayurveda – Ayurvedic Treatment of Andropause

What is Andropause?

Andropause is derived from a Greek word “andro” which means man, and “pause” which means to stop.andropause
Andropause is similar to menopause, but it is found in men. As menopause affects the life of the females, Andropause affect the life of the males. Andropause is related with the set of gradual psychological and physical changes among the middle-aged men from 40 to 55.

Usually men suffer from the bodily changes which occur very gradually; accompanied by changes in mood, attitude, fatigue, physical agility, loss of energy, sex drive and other health problems like weak bones, heart disease etc. sometimes it is also confused with Male Midlife- Crisis. It is often called Male Menopause.

Andropause is a Hormone Imbalance due to the lack or absence of Testosterone which is the Male Hormone. Historically, by the age of 55 the amounts of Testosterone secreted by the Testis are significantly lower than it was at the age of 40 years. Unlike women, men do not have a clear-cut signpost such as the cessation of menstruation to mark this transition. Both, are however, distinguished by a drop in the hormone levels; Estrogen in the females, testosterone in the males. It is a simple Endocrine Imbalance.

Ayurvedic Aspect of Andropause

According to Ayurveda, andropause can be correlated to ageing process which is a part of growth in our body. Rasayana is the best way to treat the ageing process. Ayurveda believes that all seven constituents or dhathus get weakened due to our body’s prolonged structural changes, as we age.

Ageing is an inevitable change for all living organisms. Most people go panic about getting old. It’s not the ageing, but the consequences of ageing which troubles them. By following the principles of Ayurveda it is possible to slow down the process of ageing, restore physical and mental strength and prevent the consequences of ageing up-to a certain extent.

Andropause & Osteoporosis
In an individual with osteoporosis, more bone tissue is lost than is regenerated. We all have heard of women suffering from weaker bones, or osteoporosis, after menopause. In men, testosterone is thought to play a role in helping to maintain this balance. Between the ages of 40 and 70 years, male bone density falls by up to 15 percent.

The incidence of hip fractures rises exponentially in ageing men, as it does in women, starting about 5 to 10 years later. Wrists, hips, spine and ribs are most commonly affected.

Andropause & Cardiovascular risk
It is now well accepted that women’s risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) increases after menopause. New evidence suggests that a similar phenomenon occurs in men as their testosterone levels diminish with age.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Andropause

In Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine, the treatment of Andropause involves use of potent herbs like Gokhshura (Tribulus terrestris), Kapikachhu (Mucuna pruriens ), Methi (fenugreek) and Asphaltum, also known as Shilajit. Other herbs like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Masha (Black gram) and Safed Musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum) can also provide some benefits in relieving the symptoms, mainly due to their aphrodisiac properties.

In Ayurveda, Gokhshura has been used as a physical rejuvenation tonic since time immemorial. In Ayurveda, it is also called as “Rasayana,” meaning the rejuvenator of health.

Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens) has been found to contain L-dopa, which is an amino acid that converts into dopamine. Dopamine is an essential component of our body and it is required for proper functioning of the brain. The increased dopamine levels also optimize the production of other hormones, including testosterone. Studies also show L-dopa also helps in the reduction of cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Methi (Fenugreek) contains a high amount of furostanolic saponins, which elevate testosterone levels by increasing in the amount of LH (luteinizing hormone) and DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) produced by the body. LH and DHEA are hormones that signal the release of testosterone in the body.

Shilajit is a natural concentrate of plants of the regions of the Himalayas, and is found in the Himalayan ranges. Shilajit contains at least 85 minerals in Ionic form as well as humic acid and fulvic acid. The three vital minerals, which play an important role in testosterone production in men, include zinc, copper and selenium. Shilajit contains these minerals in highly bio-available ionic form.

Ayurveda and hepatitis

The liver is the largest organ of our body, located on the right upper quadrant of our abdomens.
The functions which it performs are many. It produces bile for digestion, filters all toxins from the body, excretes bilirubin, balances cholesterol formation & hormones, metabolites carbohydrates fats and proteins, activates enzymes, synthesizes plasma proteins and clotting factors and stores glycogen, minerals, as well as vitamins (A, D, E, and K).

It is important to keep such an important organ healthy and functioning properly. A damaged liver may be either inflamed by the attack of viruses or infected by the toxic substances like alcohol and drugs, which can lead to different types of hepatitis.

Types of viral hepatitis
1. Hepatitis A and E are caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water.
2. Hepatitis B, C and D occur as a result of parenteral contact with infected body fluids.

Non-viral Hepatitis
1. Hepatitis can be caused by consumption of excessive alcohol and other toxic substances that include overuse of medication or exposure to poisons.
2. The immune system may mistake the liver as a harmful object and attack it, hindering liver function.

Ayurveda and hepatitis
Ayurvedic name for liver is “Yakrut”, the seat of fire element (pita) and root of blood channels.
Ayurveda considers the liver as a centre and origin (mula sthana) of the circulatory system (raktavaha
srotas). Modern science validated the efficacy of Ayurvedic medicine Livomap, from Maharishi Ayurveda.

Research conducted at All India Institute of Medical Science, and R&D of Maharishi Ayurveda Product on Livomap, proved the efficacy of ayurveda in hepatitis ailment without any side effect. Non-alcoholic fatty liver is increasingly as an important entity in the spectrum of liver disease indicating the presence of fatty infiltration of liver in non-alcoholics.

A double blend clinical trial on Livomap in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease showed that it is significantly effective in reducing hepatic steatosis determined on ultrasonography. It also reduced the triglycerides levels and pain in abdomen. In a nutshell, Livomap tablets and syrup from Maharishi Ayurveda is the safest method one can use in protecting and maintaining his/her liver.

Yoga and Cholesterol

Yoga is an anYoga-Class-cient form of relaxation and exercise that has many healthy benefits, including lowering

cholesterol. This is a relaxation technique that specifically can help in lowering LDL cholesterol which is the “bad” cholesterol in the blood that is produced by the liver.

Scientists in general have made the connection between higher stress levels and an increase in LDL cholesterol levels. Yoga takes care in lowering stress, which results in lower cholesterol. The practice of Yoga improves the blood and oxygen flow around the body which aids in the removal of toxins and waste.

For yoga to be truly beneficial to the lowering of your unwanted bad cholesterol it must be practiced on a regular basis. Preliminary Yoga Asanas can help to bring down the level of bad cholesterol in an affected individual. Cholesterol rises greatly with stress.

Yoga gives you the best way to relive your stress and reduces stress hormones, which in turn lowers cholesterol. A study showed that those who received instruction on yoga techniques, lifestyle recommendations and a healthy diet had a 23% drop in cholesterol–from 247 to 185–compared with 4% among those who did not. The yoga- practicing group also had a 26% drop in low-density lipoprotein, known as bad cholesterol, compared with 3% in the control group. The weight loss and conditioning that come with regular yoga practice also tend to lower triglyceride levels and boost HDL, high levels of which protect against heart attacks.

ARUCHI (Loss of appetite or Anorexia)

Aruchi as known to be the inability to eat food irrespective of hunger or aversion towards food

Aruchi can be co-related to modern term ANOREXIA (lack of loss of appetite or food). In modern terminology it’s considered to be a disorder but in Ayurveda Aruchi is considered to be a form of symptom more associated with some disease.

Arochka – According to Ayurveda is a condition manifested due to affliction of Annavaha Srotas (G.I. Tract) in association with Rasa Vaha Srotas (Circulatory System).

The cardinal symptoms are loss of desire towards food or absence of inclination for food.

The Three doshas that are not in equilibrium produces Aruchi. Vata Dosha (Prana anorexia– Udana and Samana), in association with Pitta (pachaka) play vital role in bringing about hunger. Hunger stimulates proper perception of taste. For the normal perception of taste, Kapha (Bodhaka -existing in mouth), Prana Vata (existing in head and neck) and Samana Vata (persisting in stomach) along with Pachaka Pitta should have proper co-ordination. In earlier times people use to do their work by without being dependent on any instrument so there was no requirement for additional exercise. Due to development of electronic instruments in today’s’ time, most of our physical exercise has been reduced.

Physical exercise brings about lightness in the body, increases the ability to do work & tolerance, power, and reduces the increased Dosha of the body. It increases Agni (digestive power) of body and thus helps to digest every type of diet including an incompatible diet also (viruddha ahara) which produces slow poison in the body.

According to Ayurveda improper digestion is the main cause of maximum number of diseases. Unknowingly we are taking many incompatible diets in our day-to-day life, which are so habituated in our life , that it is quiet difficult to avoid them. So exercise is a good solution for this; it is the best method of reducing obesity, which is a burning problem of present era and the root-cause of several diseases.

So, proper exercise is essential as it reduces the laziness, strengthens the immune system and produces a harmonic & balanced physique.

Vyayama1As the weaker animals like deer never come in front of lion, disease never come to a person who does regular exercise. It is very essential to excerscise in winter and autumn seasons, as even heavy exercise does not hamper with the functioning of the body. In all other seasons’ one should exercise only up-to half strength i.e. till the approach of exertive respiration (Shrama Swasa) from heart.

One should exercise according to age, strength, physique and diet and in moderation. Excessive exercise is also dangerous for the body. It may produce extreme tiredness, excess thirst, dizziness, loss of appetite, bleeding from nose etc.

Seeing the benefit of exercise we should include it accordingly in our daily routine, to maintain a healthy life.

Origin of Anti-Aging Therapy – maharishi ayurveda hospital

Anti-Aging TherapyAnti aging mainly means reversal of aging. It is mainly rejuvenation and different types of rasayana therapy are prescribed in Ayurveda which increase immunity power. Ayurveda says by taking rasayans we can overcome aging and be free from disease. Rasayana means Nectar of Life.

The best way to understand aging is to look at the biological markers of aging. These include blood pressure, body fat, muscle strength, auditory and visual thresholds, hormonal levels, immune function, metabolic rate, temperature regulation, bone density, skin thickness, skin wrinkles, cholesterol levels, aerobic capacity, antioxidant levels, sex hormone levels, sugar tolerance, muscle mass, muscle strength, immune functions, etc. It is well documented that these biological markers of aging are reversible. It is possible to reverse biological aging by at least 15 to 20 years as compared to chronological age.

It is believed that the ancient sage Maharishi Chyavana first propounded the idea of anti-aging therapy. When the Maharshi was bogged down by old age, and low energy levels, and married a young lady, he started taking chyavanaprasha, an astonishing tonic and anti-aging medicine known as a rasayana. He soon found himself on the road to complete recovery and the rasayana also helped him to rediscover his youthful vitality and vigour.

Gooseberry [Phyllaanthus emblica or amla] is the main constituent of this rasayana. The herb, thanks to its anti-aging attributes, holds a pre-eminent place in the treatment of dementia, or loss of memory – medhakshaya – which afflicts the elderly in all climes.

Gooseberry is a useful medicine for old age diseases, thanks to its memory-boosting properties, improved results in vision. Also, when taken with honey, it makes a refreshing combination, and improves energy levels in all age groups.

Anti-Aging Therapy-1

Rasayana is a special ayurvedic treatment. It has two modules – kutipravesika and vatatapika. The first ascribes itself to confining the patient in a small shelter and follows a rigid routine. The length of stay for the patient is subject to the nature of the illness and its severity. During the treatment, the patient is evaluated and given suitable rasayana, following which there is total restoration of health and freedom from illness.

Vatatapika form of treatment is less rigid and the patient is given appropriate rasayanas and routine.

Whatever the treatment procedure of either rasayana treatment, the objective, however, is the same – to cure the patient from disease and promote youthful longevity.

RELEVANCE OF AYURVEDA IN TODAY’S LIFESTYLE – Maharishi Ayurveda Hospital

Ayurveda is composed of two words-‘ayur’ meaning life and ‘veda’ meaning ‘science’ i.e. Ayurveda can easily be understood as the ‘science of life’. When in today’s world science and technology are buzz words, the relevance of the ‘science of life’ itself cannot be lost.

Ancient ayurvedic texts have been researched and a lot of hidden knowledge has been brought to surface light. For most people today’s life is busy, fast, challenging and thus not without stress and fatigue. By understanding the fundamentals of Ayurveda and adopting the simple tips in our life; can be very helpful in coping up with the fast paced life and taking care of the toll it takes on our physiologies.

We all follow some routine; a certain time to reach office, completing assignments on given dates, meeting deadlines etc. To lead a healthier life today and in the long run; we only need to sync this routine to an Ayurvedic routine. Ayurveda suggests having a routine ‘that rises with the sun and ends with sun’. Literally, one’s routine shall be in sync and inspired by the nature and should reflect the laws of nature. One of the keys to good health and feeling great all day long is living in tune with nature’s cycles.

We do not require running away from the responsibilities that we have to follow and adopt a lifestyle that is accordingly to nature. Instead what is required is that we incorporate few simple changes in our lifestyle that fulfills both the purposes of being healthy and fulfilling our responsibilities & dedicating our time demanded in the daily life.

Sunrise to Mid Morning: 6 am to 10 am of the day is dominated by the Kapha energy.  Kapha is said to be associated with laziness and lethargy; so if one leaves the bed after 10am one might not feel that fresh and active. So, it is the best time to wake up, energize and stimulate the body. It helps for a great start of the day. One should rise early, have a bath, meditate, exercise and have breakfast within two hours of waking up.

Mid- Day to Afternoon: 10 am to 2 pm in this time period Pitta is aggravated. Pitta is associated with Fire and functions to control the digestive system of the body. This means that having full meals at this time of the day will aid and improve the digestion. One should walk 100 steps after meals.

Afternoon to Evening: 2 pm to 6 pm the Vata energy is at the highest. It is associated with elimination, movement, nervous system etc. It also activates the mind and thus enhances creativity.  One should not indulge in physical activity during this time of the day and instead should opt for mental work, since the physical strength is low as compared to mental strength.

Evening to Night: 6 pm to 10 pm the cycle of the day is complete and again at this time Kapha energy starts to direct the body. It is the time to unwind and relax with the family. One should practice Meditation, have early dinner, walk and then go to bed.  There should be maximum of two hours gap between dinner & going to bed.

Such simple changes in life are practical as well as promote good health, resulting in better energy levels, less fatigue and also less chances of meeting with a disease.
