The liver is the largest organ of our body, located on the right upper quadrant of our abdomens.
The functions which it performs are many. It produces bile for digestion, filters all toxins from the body, excretes bilirubin, balances cholesterol formation & hormones, metabolites carbohydrates fats and proteins, activates enzymes, synthesizes plasma proteins and clotting factors and stores glycogen, minerals, as well as vitamins (A, D, E, and K).
It is important to keep such an important organ healthy and functioning properly. A damaged liver may be either inflamed by the attack of viruses or infected by the toxic substances like alcohol and drugs, which can lead to different types of hepatitis.
Types of viral hepatitis
1. Hepatitis A and E are caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water.
2. Hepatitis B, C and D occur as a result of parenteral contact with infected body fluids.

Ayurveda and hepatitis
Ayurvedic name for liver is “Yakrut”, the seat of fire element (pita) and root of blood channels.
